Master's thesis "Semiconductor micro strip sensor development"

The research group “detector development” at the Institute of High Energy Physics (HEPHY) is working on silicon based semiconductor sensors for the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider of CERN. Currently, we are collaborating with the European semiconductor manufacturer Infineon on the development of silicon micro strip detectors, for the CMS Phase-II upgrade scheduled in 2024.

We offer:

  • Research training in the area of semiconductor sensor technology
  • Development of new characterization techniques for Si detectors
    • Including hardware development and software development (in python)
  • Research using versatile equipment like a high-precision instruments, climatic chamber, a corona discharge device and many more…
  • The possibility to travel to CERN, DESY or MedAustron for beam tests, presentations etc.
  • A project that has the possibility of having a huge impact on the upcoming Phase-II upgrade
  • A group of highly motivated people, (see here)

We want you if:

  • You are a team player, but you can do work on your own too
  • You are motivated to learn and are  interested in particle sensors
  • You have a bachelor’s degree in physics

It would be nice (but no necessary) if:

  • You have some lab experience
  • You have experience with high voltages
  • You have basic semiconductor knowledge
  • You have basic programming skills in Python and/or LabView
