First publication of the CMS collaboration on proton-proton collisions in the LHC

Charged track density as function of the pseudorapidity compared to results of ALICE and UA5 collaborations.

The first paper of the CMS collaboration on data collected in proton-proton collisions at CERN's new accelerator, the LHC, has been accepted for publication. The study reports on the angular and momentum distributions of charged hadrons measured by the CMS experiment, one of the two general purpose detectors operating at the LHC.

The CMS experiment is a highly complex system, comprising a dozen different detector systems and tens of millions of sensitive elements. The publication of physics results less than three months after the observation of the first proton-proton collision proves the high quality of the data and the proper functioning of all components, including the leading contributions of the Institute for High Energy to the event selection and tracking systems.

The CMS collaboration and the analysis team at the Institute for High Energy Physics are looking forward to the start of the 2010 data taking period. Collisions at an energy of 7 TeV (equivalent to about 7000 proton masses) and an increase of the intensity by many orders of magnitude will allow to test the standard model of particle physics in an unexplored region and to search for new phenomena.
